NL Rain, gemaakt op Steve Reichs Music for 18 Musicians (1976), is een van Anne Teresa De Keersmaekers meest wervelende en kenmerkende voorstellingen. Met deze uitbundige, vitale choreografie keerde De Keersmaeker in 2001 terug naar twee van haar grote liefdes: pure dans en de minimalistische muziek van Steve Reich. Op de pulserende tonen van die muziek bezetten tien dansers gedurende één uur en tien minuten de scène, afgebakend door een gordijn van fijne koorden, met een indrukwekkende aaneenschakeling van virtuoze dansfrases. De wiskundige figuren, de aanhoudende herhaling, het meetkundig benutten van de ruimte, de kunst van de voortdurende variatie – alles wat stilaan tot de signatuur van de choreografe behoorde, werd in Rain tot het uiterste doorgedreven.

In Rain benadert De Keersmaeker het gezelschap dansers als een hechte groep uitgesproken individuen die, één voor één, een onmisbare rol spelen in het geheel. Zeven vrouwen en drie mannen laten zich meeslepen door een onstuitbare gezamenlijke energie die hen onderling verbindt, een bruisend netwerk waarin adem en snelheid worden gedeeld, en ook de bijzondere kameraadschap die ontstaat wanneer men de vermoeidheid voorbij is.

FR Ecrit sur Music for 18 Musicians (1976) de Steve Reich, Rain est l'une des plus brillantes productions d’Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, et l'un des moments-clés de son parcours de chorégraphe. Avec ce spectacle d'une rare vitalité, De Keersmaeker revenait en 2001 à deux de ses grands amours : la "danse pure" et la musique minimaliste de Steve Reich. Soutenus par une obsédante pulsation musicale, dix danseurs occupent durant plus d'une heure un plateau ceint par un rideau de fines cordes, dans une surabondance de virtuoses phrases dansées. Les formes mathématisées, la répétition inlassable, l'utilisation géométrique de l’espace, l'art de la variation permanente – tout ce qui était peu à peu devenu la signature de la chorégraphe est ici amplifié jusqu'au vertige.

Avec Rain, De Keersmaeker traite le collectif de danseurs comme une communauté en fusion où chacun, pourtant, tient un rôle singulier. Sept femmes et trois hommes s'abandonnent à une irrépressible énergie collective qui les connecte l'un à l'autre, réseau bouillonnant où se partagent le souffle, la vitesse, et cette étrange amitié qui ne peut naître qu'au-delà de la fatigue.

EN Rain, set to Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians (1976), is one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most characteristic performances. With this vibrant choreography, De Keersmaeker returned, in 2001, to two of her great loves: pure dance and the minimalistic music of Steve Reich. Accompanied by the pulsating tones of his music, for an hour and ten minutes ten dancers occupy the stage, delineated by a curtain of fine strings, displaying an impressive succession of virtuoso dance phrases. The mathematical figures, the sustained repetition, the geometric occupation of the space, the art of continuous variation – everything that had gradually become the choreographer’s signature was pushed to the extreme in Rain.

In Rain, De Keersmaeker approaches the company of dancers as a close-knit group of pronounced individuals who, one by one, play a vital role in the whole. Seven women and three men allow themselves to be propelled by an unstoppable joined energy that binds them together. It's a bustling network in which breath and speed is shared as well as that special comradery that forms when you are beyond fatigue.

Drumming & Rain: A Choreographer's Score

Drumming & Rain: A Choreographer’s Score is an exhaustive publication in which the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker offers the performance theorist and musicologist Bojana Cvejić wide-ranging insights into choreography, and into the making of Drumming and Rain, two landmark works created to the music of minimalist composer Steve Reich.

Rain, the documentary (DVD)

On 25th May 2011 the world renowned Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris presented Rain, its first ever performance of a choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The filmmakers Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes followed the rehearsal process from the auditions to the opening performance.

The documentary focuses on how De Keersmaeker and the Rosas dancers convey the dance idiom of the choreographer to the classically trained ballet dancers. The rigidity of ballet gives way to another kind of severity, namely the mathematical pattern of Rain, which, however, conceals a powerful emotional layering. A poetic documentary about searching, looking and hesitating within the walls of the opera, which at times can be claustrophobic.

The book and dvd can be sold before and after the performances.
