NL Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich, de allereerste voorstelling van choreografe Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, ging in 1982 in première. Fase bestaat uit drie duetten en één solo, gechoreografeerd op vier repetitieve composities van de Amerikaanse minimalist Steve Reich.  De Keersmaeker gebruikt de structuur van Reichs muziek om een onafhankelijke bewegingstaal te ontwikkelen die de muziek niet louter illustreert maar er als het ware een nieuwe dimensie aan toevoegt. Zowel de muziek als de dans vertrekken van het principe van faseverschuiving: doormiddel van minieme variaties beginnen aanvankelijk perfect synchroon uitgevoerde bewegingen langzamerhand te verglijden en te verschuiven, waardoor er een complex spel van voortdurend veranderende vormen en patronen ontstaat.

Voor de eerste keer in de lange opvoeringsgeschiedenis geeft Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker deze voorstelling, die ze steeds zelf heeft gedanst, door aan twee nieuwe danseressen.

FR Créé en 1982, Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich est le premier spectacle de la chorégraphe Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Fase est composé de trois duos et d’un solo, tous chorégraphiés sur des œuvres de Steve Reich, le pionnier de la musique répétitive (ou « minimaliste ») américaine. De Keersmaeker se sert des structures musicales de Reich pour développer son propre langage gestuel, qui complémente la musique plus qu’il ne la redouble. Danse et musique explorent le même principe structurant : le « décalage de phase » à l’intérieur du jeu des répétitions. Par légers glissements, infimes variations, des mouvements synchrones se mettent doucement à décaler, donnant naissance à un miroitement complexe de formes et de motifs en perpétuelle mutation.

Pour la première fois dans la longue histoire de ce spectacle, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker transmet la pièce qu’elle a toujours dansée elle-même à deux nouvelles danseuses.

EN Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s very first performance, premiered in 1982. Fase comprises three duets and one solo, choreographed to four repetitive compositions by the American minimalist Steve Reich. De Keersmaeker uses the structure of Reich’s music to develop an independent movement idiom that doesn’t merely illustrate the music but also adds a new dimension to it. Both the music and the dance start from the principle of phase shifting through tiny variations: movements that are initially perfectly synchronous gradually start slipping and sliding, resulting in an ingenious play of continuously changing forms and patterns.

Having always danced Fase herself, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, for the first time in the work’s history, now passes it on to two new dancers.
